Area rugs can serve as great accents. These rugs don't come in plain colors alone; in fact, it can come in a variety of colors to the point that it looks like an artwork rather than a rug.

If you don't want to spend a lot of money on decorative fixtures, you can always buy an area rug and it will do the trick. Area rugs can command attention and it can even serve as the focal point of your room which allows it to tie everything down.

There are a lot of area rugs available in the market and because of the huge number you might find yourself confused and lost. Here are some things that you should consider before making that final purchase.

1. Theme. If you are fond with themes, then you might want to look for a rug that would fit to your room's theme. For example, if your room has an oriental theme, then an oriental rug might fit perfectly.

2. Pattern. If you find plain rugs boring, then you might want something that catches attention. In an area rug, the pattern is usually the deciding factor on whether or not it will be able to draw some attention to it. The pattern is based on the geometric shapes. Some patterns are comprised of straight lines or curved lines, while others depict a certain scenario and the images are as vivid as possible.

3. Color. If you have a rainbow colored room then the rug's color is no problem at all. However, in cases wherein you have a specific color scheme for a particular room, then you might want to pay attention to your rug's color as to whether or not it will match the color of the room. Mixing and matching colors can be fun but if you do it the wrong way you might end up with not so pleasing results.

4. Design. Rugs come in different designs. There are those known as medallions wherein the designs and patterns are focused on the center of the rug. Then there are those rugs whose design is found on every square inch of the rug, otherwise known as the overall design. Then there are those rugs whose design is placed randomly or asymmetrically. Other than the pattern, you should also consider the design of the rug because this is also another make or break factor of your rug's overall effect. Choose a design that will fit your room's motif.

5. Size. This factor is also important. If you are buying an area rug to be placed under the table, do not go for those that end up to the table's legs only because this will surely defeat the whole purpose of adding an area rug to your room. If you don't intend to cover the whole room with a rug, do not buy a rug that is too big.

The size of the rug should depend on the area where you are going to place it. If you are going to place it near the doorway then it should be small enough to fit there. Choose a rug that is large enough to accommodate the whole bed but small enough so that it doesn't cover every single square inch of floor area.
