Four Fundamental Questions Before Buying Any Area Rug

Area rugs come in various specialties and specifications. What makes a great wool rug does not necessarily apply to a skin rug. The patterns that you look for in an Oriental rug are not the same ones that you seek in a floral rug. No matter how varied your preferences may be, there are still basic questions you should be asking yourself and your rug dealer before purchasing any area rug. Be a street-smart and a well-informed shopper. Scroll down the checklist and find out what these fundamental questions are.

1. How much are you willing to spend on a piece of rug?

Ask yourself this question to get some direction on your buying destination and your expected find. When you're all about rugs and don't mind spending a fortune on them, expect to bag a high-quality area rug from a specialty shop of your choice. When you're more of a frugal buyer and need only a rug to splash some color on your floor at the lowest cost possible, head to garage sales and home improvement stores.

2. How and where will the area rug take position in your home?

Do not get blinded by aesthetics. Anticipating how and where your rug will take position in your home will put you on course regarding your preferences on the rug's make, durability and cleaning requirements. If you intend to just hang your area rug, then there is no need for you to fret that much about its resistance against a high volume of activity; you may even want to opt for finer and more delicate materials in your rug to invite conversations. If you intend to place the rug in a playroom, you will naturally look for a rug that is durable, longer-lasting and convenient to clean.

3. What size is appropriate?

Like most merchandise, area rugs do come in standard sizes: 5' x 3', 8' x 5', 9' x 6', 10' x 8', 12' x 9' and 14' x 10'. If these sizes are not what you are looking for, get a customized rug but note that such will require you to place an order. Still, size per se is not your sole concern. You must also consider how many rugs will occupy the same room you intend to adorn. By rule of thumb, do not get similar-sized rugs for the same room as these will compete for attention rather than provide variety and coherence to your space. Select the biggest rug for your centerpiece and smaller rugs for your secondary pieces.

4. What colors and shades must you stick with?

Do not let excellent workmanship and intricate details cloud your judgment in buying area rugs. Keep a stern eye on the colors that can blend in to your existing space; ditch those that do not meet your requirements. Buying a nicely made rug that does not match your domicile's motif and theme is practically a wasted investment, because you will end up storing the rug in your closets rather than flaunting it on your floor.

Whatever type of area rug you may be hunting for, let practicality and reason prevail in your decisions.
